Project 4. Overcoming Stress in Tough Times: A Self-Help Initiative

In times of adversity, stress can become overwhelming, impacting both mental and physical health. The "Overcoming Stress in Tough Times" project was developed to empower individuals with practical, culturally adapted strategies for managing stress.

Conducted in collaboration with the International Disaster Psychology: Trauma and Global Mental Health MA Program at the University of Denver, this initiative brought together global expertise and local insights. The project was led by Yara Balouk, a graduate student, in partnership with Dyari S. Hama Amin, under the guidance of Dr. Maria Vukovich, the program’s co-director.

Key Components This project operated on two integrated fronts:

  1. Adaptation of Self-Help Techniques

    • Drawing from the WHO’s guide “Doing What Matters in Times of Stress”, five core techniques were selected and culturally adapted:

      • Grounding: Techniques to stay present and connected, reducing anxiety and distress.

      • Express Yourself: Safe ways to process and communicate emotions, fostering mental clarity.

      • Feeling Safe: Strategies to create a sense of security, especially during tumultuous times.

      • Acceptance and Growth: Tools to cope with uncertainty, emphasizing resilience and adaptability.

      • Self-Compassion: Encouraging kindness toward oneself, crucial for recovery and mental strength.

    • Each technique was simplified and translated into Kurdish, ensuring accessibility for diverse community members.

  2. Public Dissemination and Engagement

    1. The techniques were tunred into PDF files and wre dessimated electronically in order to ascertain acessibility and reach.

    2. The adapted techniques were shared widely through workshops, schools, and online platforms, making mental health support both reachable and relatable.

      Project Duration: June 1, 2024 – November 25, 2024

By combining scientific research with cultural sensitivity, this project aimed to equip communities in Kurdistan with the tools to navigate stress, cultivate resilience, and maintain mental well-being amid challenges.
