In the wake of drone and missile attack on the town of Koya, many residents experienced trauma, stress, and psychological distress. The Psychosocial Support Initiative (Koya) was launched to provide practical mental health resources to those affected, particularly through accessible, evidence-based self-help materials.
Key Activities
This initiative focused on translating, publishing, and distributing mental health resources to individuals in need. The following steps were taken:
Translation of three NHS self-help guides on PTSD, Anxiety, and Panic into Kurdish. These guides were chosen for their proven effectiveness in helping individuals cope with psychological distress.
Printing and free distribution of the translated guides among residents of Koya and students at Koya University. By ensuring wide accessibility, the project aimed to normalize help-seeking behaviors and provide practical strategies for coping with trauma.
Financial support from the Sulaymaniyah Governor, who covered all printing costs, demonstrating institutional recognition of mental health as a priority.
Project Duration: January 1, 2023 – June 1, 2023
This initiative not only addressed the immediate mental health needs of affected communities but also laid the groundwork for integrating mental health awareness into broader public health responses.
