The armed forces of the Kurdistan Region are characterized by their large numbers, lack of institutionalization, multiple decision-making centers, and complex political objectives. Regarding the number, it consists of 170,000 members who receive salaries, which is considered a negative characteristic of these forces compared to the number of armed forces in countries with democratic systems. Of this large number, only about 42,000 acts directly under the command of the Peshmerga Ministry. This is considered a dangerous indicator of security, stability, economy and the future of governance in the region. Worse still, these armed forces are politically divided, mainly between two main parties ruling the region (the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan).
